Gorilla trekking rules and regulations are basically the set dos and don’ts, guidelines or safety measures visitors need to observe while on trek to see mountain gorillas in the wild. Visitors are always briefed at 7:00am by park officially about the dos and don’ts prior embarking on the actual gorilla trek at 8:00am. These safety measures apply to all national parks where gorilla tours are conducted that is Mgahinga National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda, Volcanoes National Park in northwestern Rwanda and the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Set gorilla trekking rules and regulations include.

  1. Only 8 visitors are allowed to trek only one habituated gorilla group per day. This is to avoid causing any disturbance on the daily behaviors of mountain gorillas and also not to put them into higher risk of catching human infectious diseases.
  2. Visitors should keep their voices low at all times while on trek to see mountain gorillas however, feel free to ask as many questions as possible. This gorilla trekking measure is intended to reduce disturbances on these creatures that one way may make them get irritated thus causing harm to humans.
  3. Leave the habitat the way you found. Do not dispose throw any kind of rubbish in the forest. Carry back your litter or rubbish and put it into dust bin at the park headquarters or designated sites.
  4. Always keep a distance of 7 meters away from mountain gorillas and also avoid any body contact as much as possible. Do not touch gorillas even when they get close to you and make sure that they always calm and this will help reduce any risk of them contracting any kind of human infectious diseases.
  5. Avoid any direct eye contact with mountain gorillas because at times, they can charge or get irritated and when they do, calm down and do not run away otherwise such action may cause harm to you. When they charge against you, make sure that you bow down to show that you are submissive to them.
  6. No flashlight camera is accepted when taking photos of these amazing creatures. If your camera has a flashlight please, turn it off before shooting photos.
  7. Only an hour is given to you to have a face to face encounter with mountain gorillas and also for you to take photos, explore their behavior and body gestures. This rule is significant as it helps avoid any kind of disturbance on the general behavior of these creatures in the wild.
  8. Do not go to trek gorillas if you are not feeling well or you are ill. This rule is essential as it helps prevent spread of human infectious diseases from humans to these creatures. In case you are coughing make sure that you cover your mouth and nose when sneezing. Remember mountain gorillas share about 98 percent of their DNA with humans making them to be very susceptible to human infectious diseases.
  9. If you wish to help yourself while in the forest, ensure that you dig up a deep hole and after, let it be covered.
  10. Do not eat, drink or even smoke while trekking gorillas or even near them
  11. On gorilla trek, make sure that you keep within your group to avoid getting lost which puts into a risk of being harmed by these creatures when you are alone in the forest. Make sure that you avoid any kind of unnecessary movement and always follow the trails these creatures used previously.
